The Game-Changing Factor in Pageant Interviews: Expert Tips from Judges Themselves
Interview is the part of pageant weekend that makes most girls nervous, and I totally get why. You walk into a room, a panel of people you've never met is looking right at you, and you have no idea what they're going to ask.
In reality, judges want you to do well. Seriously. They're rooting for you from the second you walk in.
At Worlds and National Miss Tourism, Interview counts for 25% of your score, exactly the same as Evening Gown, Intro & Impact, and Photogenic. Our judges are business owners and pros from modeling, talent, hair and makeup, and photography, and every single one signs an affidavit saying they don't know any of the contestants. So everybody walks in with a clean slate. What happens in that room is all you. So, what are they actually watching for? Let's go.
1. The First Ten Seconds
Judges start forming an impression before you say a word. They notice how you
walk in, whether you smile, and whether you look at them, they also notice body odor and bad breath.
Shower and use deodorant.
Be sure you have fresh breath.
Obnoxious fragrance. (strong fragrances are a no)
Put your smile on before you reach the door.
Make eye contact with each judge as you say hello.
Stand tall and plant your feet. No swaying, no shifting side to side.
Make sure your light blue cocktail dress fits well and feels comfortable. If you're tugging at a strap or a hemline, the judges will notice that instead of you.
2. Whether You Actually Listened
This one sounds so simple, and it's where a lot of girls lose points. A judge asks one question and gets an answer to a different one, usually the answer the
contestant practiced at home.
Listen all the way to the end of the question. Take a breath. Then answer what they asked. A one-second pause before you speak looks confident and thoughtful. Judges love it.
3. Real Stories Over Memorized Lines
Judges hear "I want to make a difference in my community" all day long. What
they remember is the girl who tells them about the Saturday she spent sorting donations at the food pantry, or the little boy she tutors in reading and what he said when he finished his first chapter book.
Specific details make you memorable. Names, places, what you saw, what you learned. Practice your stories so you know them well, and then tell them like you're talking to a friend.
4. That You Know Your Own Paperwork
A lot of interview questions come straight from what you wrote on your
application and bio. If you listed a hobby, a goal, or a service project, be ready to talk about it with excitement.
Read through everything you turned in the week before Finals. Every line on that paper is a question you could get.
5. How You Handle the Curveball
At some point you'll get a question you didn't see coming. Judges ask these on purpose. They want to see how you think on your feet.
Take a breath and smile.
It's totally fine to say, "Let me think about that for a second."
If you're asked your opinion, give one, and back it up with a reason.
If you honestly don't know something, say so gracefully and share what you do know or would want to learn.
Staying calm and genuine scores way higher than a perfect answer delivered in a panic.
6. Your Energy From Head to Toe
Judges are reading your whole body, not just your words.
Posture: shoulders back, chin level.
Hands: relaxed at your sides or lightly clasped. Natural gestures are great when you're telling a story.
Voice: loud enough to fill the room, at a pace that lets them catch every word.
Face: let it react! When you talk about something you love, it should show.
7. Whether You'd Be an Amazing Titleholder
This is the big one. Behind every question, the judges are asking themselves: Can I picture her wearing this crown and sash for a whole year?
For Miss Tourism, that means they're looking for a girl who:
Loves serving her community and has already been doing it.
Could confidently tell anyone why they should visit her hometown or state. (Know your top three spots and why you love them!)
Understands that a titleholder shows up, posts, creates content, and represents the organization with pride. You are an inspiration, not a decoration.
Treats everyone with kindness, including the other girls.
8. The Exit
Your interview isn't over until you're out the door. Thank the judges, smile, and walk out with the same energy you walked in with. Judges absolutely notice the girl who stays gracious all the way to the last step.
Things Judges Aren't Scoring
Just so you can let go of a few worries:
Big fancy vocabulary. Clear and honest... wins every time.
A long list of past titles. Most of our World Finals winners were first-time competitors!
Where you're from or what your background is. Miss Tourism is for girls from every background, full stop.
Your Interview Prep Game Plan
Do mock interviews with someone who doesn't know you well. A teacher, a coach, a family friend. Ask them to throw in a few surprise questions.
Record yourself answering questions on your phone and watch it back. You'll catch habits you never knew you had.
Keep up with current events a little each day during the weeks before Finals.
Know your hometown and state. What would you show a visitor first? Why?
Re-read your application and bio so every answer about yourself feels easy.
Practice your walk-in and walk-out in your actual Finals dress and shoes.
And here's a bonus tip a lot of girls don't know about: after the live pageant, you can request feedback from your score sheets for up to 60 days. Use it! It's one of the best tools you have for growing as a competitor.
